Daydreamin’ on Lincoln Way
October 2, 1997
A new Campustown store, Daydreams, offers more variety and handcrafted items than its predecessor.
Daydreams, which just opened at 2408 Lincoln Way, previously the home of the Peaceful Fool, is stocked with added goodies for everyone.
“We offer more rock shirts like ska, Wu-Tang and Primus rather than just the hippy stuff, but we have the hippy stuff too,” said Daydreams manager Carrie Sondag.
The store also prides itself on buying many items that are handcrafted by people in Ames.
“There are a lot of people that come in making hemp jewelry,” said Jeff Sterling, Daydreams employee. “We had a guy come in selling some small conga drums that he made, and we bought those from him.”
Sondag said owners Jerry Clark and Kathy Fiedler started out doing street vending and having shows. She said the street vending and shows worked out well, and they decided to open a store in Des Moines.
The store in Des Moines, called Good Day Sunshine, is located on University Avenue and 24th Street near Drake University.
Originally, the owners only came to Ames to buy fixtures from the Peaceful Fool store.
Once they started talking, they decided to buy the whole store, Sondag said.
“They just kinda walked into it,” she said.
Daydreams tries to attend art events where they set up booths for their merchandise.
“We were at Marleyfest this year. We try to put up stands for different shows or organizations,” Sondag said. “We tried to do the Togetherfest, but it kind of snuck up on us and we couldn’t make it.”
When asked about their most popular item, Sondag said that’s a hard question because they have many popular ites.
