Tricks and treats planned for weekend
October 29, 1997
Concerts, costume parties and midnight movies will grace Ames on Halloween weekend.
For people looking for fun on the haunting holiday, events around town will be held for every age group.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will once again do the “Time Warp” onto the big screen at Varsity Theater, located at 2412 Lincoln Way.
The manager of Varsity Theater, Jason Smith, said the midnight showing will be held on both Friday and Saturday nights. Prop kits will be sold at the snack bar for a minimal fee, and everyone is encouraged to dress as their favorite character.
Mayhem Collectibles, 2532 Lincoln Way, will be holding their annual Halloween costume party Nov. 1. This year the party will include giveaways, an artist signing comics at noon and a costume contest with prizes like gift certificates.
The artist, Phillip Hester, has drawn “Swamp Thing” for D.C. Comics and also has his own comic called “The Wretch.”
“People usually come in all day, but actually the party starts around 5 p.m.,” said Fred Lloyd, a Mayhem employee.
For those who like to dance the night away, Infinity, a new club at 111 5th St., will have a very special guest DJ from Chicago spinning Deep House music on both Friday and Saturday nights. They will have costume contests both nights with $50 grand prizes. Friday night will be 21 and older and Saturday will allow all ages.
The Maintenance Shop in the Memorial Union is hosting Hi-Fi and the Roadburners on Halloween night, with their strange mix of rockabilly, punk and ska.
“There will be two all-ages shows, one at 8 p.m. and one at 11 p.m.,” Sara Troy, an employee of the M-Shop, said.
For the 21 and older crowd, People’s Bar and Grill, 2428 Lincoln Way, will hold a Halloween Freak Show with Hydroplane on Thursday and the Swing Crew Halloween show on Friday. Tickets are available in advance for both shows.
For all who want an old-fashioned scare, two haunted houses will be open in Ames for the Halloween weekend.
Monster Bash ’97, a haunted house sponsored by the Ames Jaycees and Ames radio station KCCQ, will be open at the Cyclone Truck Stop on U.S. Highway 30. It will open at 7 p.m. every night until Nov. 1.
Another haunted house, Goreville Manor, located at the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, will be open on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. until midnight. The proceeds from the house will go to charity.
For the little monsters who are looking for a safe and fun time, North Grand Mall is hosting safe trick-or-treating on Thursday night. Mall merchants will give out treats from 5-7 p.m. and Project Safe will be distributing goodie bags to parents. The mall will also have a costume contest at 7 p.m. near the center court.
