Melting pot no more?
October 2, 1997
I don’t know if I’m speaking for many others on campus, but don’t you think society is going too far with “correctness” and diversity?
Whatever happened to America being the “great melting pot” and everyone being “American?” Now we are all different. We are only dividing ourselves with this oral segregation. And what about this whole issue involving Catt Hall?
I’m sure Carrie Chapman Catt did some great things in her time to have the building named after her. But changing the name is like tearing down the Washington Monument because George Washington had slaves. We cannot use today’s standards to judge people of the past.
America was one very racist nation … and in some ways it still is. We cannot attempt to hide it through changing the names of some buildings. We, as a society, must accept that fact and move on. We must work to better our nation for everyone. We, as Americans, must learn to stand together as a united front.
