Iowa Libertarian party holds its state convention
October 9, 1997
The Libertarian Party of Iowa will hold its state convention in the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union Sunday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The party, formed in 1971, is the third-largest political party in the United States; however, it is rather small in Iowa, said David Kruse, current party chair in Iowa.
“The Libertarian Party is known for its willingness to protect the individual citizens of the United States,” Kruse said. He said the organization abides “100 percent” by the Constitution.
Sunday’s schedule includes four speakers.
Carolyn Reinhold will speak on the question of Libertarian support for circumcision prohibition.
Randy Herode, candidate for party chair, will talk about the 10th Amendment initiative.
Edmund Contoski, author of “Makers and Takers: How Wealth and Progress Are Made and How They Are Taken Away or Prevented,” will speak on the best-kept environmental secrets.
Steve Dasbach, national chair of the party, will speak about the future of the Libertarian Party and how it may one day be the most influential alternative party in the United States.
The party brochure says the Libertarians believe being free and independent is a great way to live.
“We want a system which encourages all people to choose what they want from life; that lets them live, love, work, play and dream their own way,” the brochure says.
The Libertarian Party has two members who are also affiliated with Iowa State.
David Davis, graduate student in political science, is the campaign coordinator, and Derrick Grimmer, film and technology, is the advising professor.
