The few ups and many downs of college football
October 20, 1997
Who is the best team in college football? This is one of the first years in my recent memory when the public has not formed a consensus about a current Top 25 team that seems to be unstoppable.
Penn State is No. 1, but are they really that unbeatable? The strength of the Nittnay Lions’ schedule is yet to come, leaving doubts in the minds of many.
Florida fell to LSU two weeks ago, only to see LSU take a fall this past Saturday. Ohio State looked great before meeting up with Penn State. Iowa is a quarterback and a coach away from even being a Rose Bowl contender. North Carolina and Michigan State also were upset.
So who is the odds-on pick to win the NCAA College Football Championship?
The answer is: Right now no one is a favorite, but I have an idea I can’t bear to think about.
It is going to come down to Florida State or Nebraska? Hopefully, we will see a January 1 match-up between these two teams.
Both teams, although they run different offenses, are frightfully similar. Nebraska now has solidified its defensive core, while Florida State may still have the best defense in the world.
The two offenses share a common problem: Their quarterbacks are both an arm away from throwing a touchdown pass. FSU’s Thad Busby supposedly has out-of-the-world leadership skills, while NU’s Scott Frost receives the same praise.
Is it just me, or does Frost have the most jacked-up throwing motion in the history of the sport? Who taught this kid to shot-put the football? As far as I’m concerned, I could run the Nebraska offense and the “Cornshuckers” would be just as successful.
Busby has a prettier throwing motion but struggles with the accuracy part of passing.
In the end, I think the Huskers will claim the national title. To say that leads me to the contemplation of suicide as we speak.
By the way, what is up with Nebraska? Are they getting better at hiding their criminal element?
Shouldn’t there be dudes with bullets lodged in their asses or someone beating on a woman?
I yearn for the days of NU murder trials, rape charges and assaults. Nebraska is letting me down. Where have the days gone when Nebraska runningbacks were streaking through the streets only to receive a paralyzing bullet in the chest from a female officer?
I am distressed.
But that’s how my year is going so far. Ups and downs rule my daily agenda. 35″ Mudder is doing great, but my fiance is turning into Satan. I beat my roommate on a last-second play in Madden football just to go find out that I failed a test.
Ups and downs, man. Ups and downs.
I guess I’ll leave you all with some constants. Icehouse is still refreshing, I’m sexist and bald, black is the the devil’s choice, Nebraska isn’t fooling anyone, revenge is a dish best served cold, Corey Moss is the reincarnated Vanilla Ice, Dan McCarney needs a win, Cyclone fans need a win, the Cyclone football team needs a win, Marv Albert is king of my world, I’m stubborn, you’re weak when it comes to love, condoms are a false sense of security and the American Indian will never buy into the American dream. Peace out.
We’ll talk later.
