Respect and tolerate
October 21, 1997
Hello, my name is David, and I’m a Christian.
First, I’m sick of the self-righteous people who write in and go off on everybody who isn’t Christian. One should respect others and their opinions enough not to verbally attack them.
I admire your desire for converting others to the faith, but belittling people merely drives them away.
Perhaps if you showed some respect or at least tolerance of others’ ideals, they may respect or tolerate yours, thus eventually opening a gateway of conversation where the Holy Spirit may work through you.
Second, I’m sick of the self-righteous people who write in and go off on everybody who is Christian. One should respect others and their opinions enough not to verbally attack them.
Although all Christians should feel the desire to attempt to prove to everyone that through Jesus there is everlasting life, not all of them are going to shove it down your throat.
I think that as soon as most people hear a debate based around religion, they suddenly get defensive. Both parties are guilty of this. Patience and tolerance were attributes of the one true Teacher.
And, for those of you who don’t believe in that kind of thing, patience and tolerance are just plain positive personality traits to strive for. It seems that all anyone really wants is for others to respect their own opinions.
It is much easier to respect the opinions of others when you respect them as a person, but it is much harder to earn that respect when all that comes out of your mouth are disparaging comments.
So, if you can’t say anything nice…
