Golfers lasso second place in Texas tourney

Although the Texas weather was cool for October, the Cyclone men’s golf team set the course on fire at the Red Raider Tournament that concluded Tuesday.

Iowa State smashed four school records in their runner-up finish.

The team’s record-low team score of 14 under par was just one of the amazing feats accomplished in Lubbock, Texas.

Cyclone leader Jon Levy was confident assessing the team’s talent, believing this record-setting feat was, “almost to be expected.

We set [this record] last year and rewrote that record this year.”

“We played wonderful. We had five people who had a chance to score low,” ISU golfer Matt Lewis said.

Lewis proved to be a dominant force in this tournament, earning medalist honors.

His nine-under 207 is also the lowest individual score in school history.

Levy said he was happy with Lewis’s triumph. “He’s been hitting towards it all fall and finally came through,” he said.

“It was great to see Matt finally win one. He has been so close so many times,” Cyclone golfer Jon Brackmann added.

Brackmann also tied a single-round record by shooting six under par in the final round of the tournament.

“Everything was clicking,” he said about his record-tying performance.

After going two under on the front nine, “I birdied the 10th and 11th and cruised from there,” he said.

Finally, ISU’s single-round team score of 10 under, which set another record.

Despite all the record breaking, New Mexico State’s score of 22 under par edged out the cardinal and gold for the team title.

The champion score was described as “unbelievable” by both Cyclones Levy and Brackmann.

Sam Houston State finished third, coming in six shots behind the Cyclones. The hard ground of the west Texas prairie helped the course play a lot shorter than the yard markers indicated. The lack of wind also provided for prime play on the links.

“Conditions were very scorable because there was no wind. It was kind of cold and cloudy,” Levy said.

“Most southern schools aren’t used to playing in 50 degree weather, while we regularly practice in it,” Lewis added.

He said the fall apparel of gloves, pants and windbreakers were in full force for the duration of the tournament.

This tournament was ISU’s finale for the fall season.

Levy said he was quite satisfied with the results and the adjustments the team made to its new coach. Levy also said he was pleased with coach Jamie Bermel and the players and was pleased the coaching transition went well.

“It was a good season. Things look good for the spring,” he said.

Most importantly, Levy said he feels this tournament is a good way to finish the fall schedule.

“We beat the teams that we needed to beat in our district, and that was important,” he said.
