Lincoln Highway video makes the big time
October 2, 1997
The Lincoln Highway, runs through Ames on Lincoln Way, will be spotlighted Sunday at 7 p.m. on the “National Geographic Explorer” program broadcast nationally on the TBS network.
The 20-second clip features the song “Rolling Down That Lincoln Highway,” written and performed by Shadric Smith of Fort Dodge.
The video was produced by Roger Riley of Riley Communications of Ames.
Riley said he got the idea for the video when he was working for the Iowa Lincoln Highway Association and met Smith.
“The way he wrote the lyrics, it just sounded like it could be a music video,” Riley said.
He said he called Smith one day when he had some extra time and asked to meet him at Nilands Corner near Colo. That corner, he said, has a cafe, a motel and a gas station all in one spot and was “one of the first interstate-type intersections in Iowa.”
They spent a little over an hour shooting the video, he said.
The video also includes scenes of the Lincoln Highway in Ogden and was selected for a broadcast on American Trails, which will also feature the Oregon Trail and Route 66.
“People have kind of forgotten about the Lincoln Highway,” Riley said.
Riley said the Lincoln Highway was started in 1913 by a group of Eastern businessmen who sold products such as cement and rubber and wanted to encourage people to drive.
He said they wanted to build a transcontinental highway from New York to San Francisco.
