Date rape a concern for colleges nationwide

Women’s Week is a time for both women and men to celebrate and discuss women’s achievements and issues; affecting nearly one out of eight college women a year, date rape is an issue on all college campuses.
Lt. Steve Hasstedt from the Department of Public Safety said DPS had three reports of “forceable sex offenses” last year.
Hasstedt said two of those reports came from the greek system.
Hasstedt said there were 68 reports of sexual assaults made to Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support (ACCESS) during the ’96-’97 school year.
The calls to ACCESS were made by victims who experienced assault both on and off campus.
Hasstedt said of all the reports filed with DPS, it is rare for a victim to follow up on charges.
“There’s rarely prosecution,” Hasstedt said. “Some [victims] recant their stories, while others just might not want to go through the legal process.”
Hasstedt said the figures are fairly typical for midwestern colleges, “but every situation is different.”
Any student who is harassed or attacked is encouraged to report the attack to DPS, he said.
“We can understand that a [victim] might not want to report the attack,” Hasstedt said.
