Iowa State’s Memorial Union Vending recently donated $5,000 to the Minority Scholarship Endowment. Money from the vending machines all around campus was used to collect funds for the scholarship.

The $5,000 check was delivered Monday morning by a representative from the Memorial Union and Coca-Cola Company.

“We had this creative idea to channel some of the vending machine money to scholarships,” Kathy Svec, marketing coordinator of the Memorial Union, said. “We are very excited about [the donation].”

Svec said she hopes people understand some of the hard- earned money they put into the vending machines is going to a good cause.

The idea to use vending machine money for a scholarship originated with Bill Young, director of food service.

The Union has been in the vending machine business since last year, when they signed a contract to handle all the vending machines on campus.

Svec said the Union plans to continue donating scholarship money for the Minority Scholarship Endowment.

She said they hope to increase the scholarship donation every year.

Phillis Lepke, vice president of giving programs of the ISU Foundation, said the ISU Foundation will be working with Minority Student Affairs and the Financial Aid Office to determine what criteria will be used to distribute the scholarships.
