Christmas shopping in mid-October

Most Iowa State students are just finishing up their midterm exams and are anticipating the end of the semester.

But the end of the semester also means Christmas is just around the corner.

On Sunday at First Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg St., students can get a head start with their Christmas shopping by avoiding the hectic crowds and outrageous prices with “One-Stop Christmas Shopping.” Along with First Methodist Church, Gamma Phi Beta sorority is also helping sponsor the event for Homecoming 1997.

Gifts such as gift baskets, crafts, household knick-knacks, jewelry, toys and books will be available at the event.

A wide array of clothing will also be for sale at “One-Stop Christmas Shopping.”

All proceeds and profits will be used to benefit cystic fibrosis research.

“Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening, chronic illness that effects the mucus lining” of children and young adults afflicted with this unfortunate disease, Michelle Hall, event organizer, said.

Hall said cystic fibrosis makes organ functioning harder, greatly effecting breathing and digestion.

Gamma Phi Beta sorority has been spending time helping to organize the sale, Hall said.

“The girls are helping as a Homecoming philanthrophy event, selling raffle tickets and putting up flyers,” she said. “They have been a great help.”

Hall knows first-hand what dealing with the disease is like. She said her son Alex, who will be 2 years old in December, is presently coping with cystic fibrosis.

To help support her son and others suffering from the disease, Hall said she hopes the Ames community will take time out of their Sunday afternoon to take a look at the various items for sale.
