Underage students contact authorities, not charged with alcohol offenses

The two Iowa State students who sought help for alcohol poisoning victim Jared Kenyon were not charged after they admitted to drinking underage.
Kenyon, 19, a freshman in chemical engineering, became unconscious after of drinking a fifth of vodka Thursday, Oct. 9. He was admitted to Mary Greeley Medical Center at about 2 a.m. and was released later that morning.
The Department of Public Safety would not release the names of the two students who had helped Kenyon, but the two were not charged with any offense related to their drinking behavior that morning.
Loras Jaeger, director of DPS, said his department is looking at all alcohol-related situations on a case-by-case basis to determine negligence.
“We have a huge responsibility to stop the free flow of alcohol around this campus,” Jaeger said.
In a recent press release, Jaeger said the two minors were not charged “because we want to encourage people to act on behalf of the safety and well-being of others.”
Jaeger said he hopes this incident will prompt people to think about the issue of binge drinking. He said he wished he could come up with an answer to the problem.
“I hope students realize that they can have a fun and great experience in college without getting blown out of their minds by drinking,” Jaeger said.
Story County Attorney Mary Richards said in a recent press release concerning the Kenyon incident, “Too many times in the past couple of years we have been only heartbeats away from losing a young person to binge drinking.”
Richards said the city and law enforcement agencies intend to enforce alcohol laws in an effort to reduce binge drinking. But she stressed they do not want anyone to hesitate to call for help when someone is in danger because of alcohol consumption.
Jaeger said above all, the main concern of DPS is the safety of students.
