A disappointing vote

Evan Mortenson

As a non-traditional student (age 36, married, living off-campus and the father of two), I am disappointed that both non-traditional GSB senators (Hamill-Wilson and McGriff) voted against a dry Veishea.

I am disappointed that their clear message is that the typically older, more experienced and presumed more responsible student is less motivated to self-control.

It has been mandated that Veishea will be dry or there will be no Veishea, so it follows that these senators would rather give up Veishea (permanently) than to to give up alcohol for three days.

They might argue that the non-traditional students’ record of responsible drinking makes the pledge unnecessary for us, but it does not. Real responsible behavior means taking the pledge, and exercising the self-control necessary to live without alcohol for three days. Three days! What’s the big deal? Just do it!

It seems to me that a one year moratorium on Veishea in memory of Mr. Sellers (incidently, not an idea that President Jischke would likely buy) would be the only “cosmetic” solution. That plan would truly accomplish nothing but a break in the Veishea tradition. Just because I’m a “non-traditional” student doesn’t mean I’m a radical. It seems that our senators are the radical ones.

And finally, dittos to Mr. Travis J. Muff.
