Lack of awareness
October 31, 1997
I am writing in response to the letter about transsexual parents that appeared in Tuesday’s Daily. I was disappointed by both the lack of awareness and the unkindness expressed by Garren Bugh.
That “poor child” is an amazingly bright, funny, strong six-year-old. He is handling his father’s gender transition with a great deal more wit and understanding than many adults.
The letter you printed made a number of false assumptions about transgendered people in general, and about Sean Dennison in particular. I have watched Sean parent his son for almost four years now.
He was a wonderful parent when he was a woman, and continues to be just as good a parent as a man. He is godfather to my youngest son. His recognition of his own transsexuality and his dealing with it in an open way, are reflections of his courage and commitment to integrity.
I understand that transgender issues are difficult ones for many people to deal with. But those of us who are not transsexual have a great deal to learn from those who are.
It’s better to ask questions and get solid information before making assumptions and unkind accusations about someone we don’t know.
