Tau Beta Pi holds special run Saturday
October 8, 1997
Over 100 runners will be taking over central campus on Saturday morning as the fourth annual Tau Beta Pi, Pi Mile Run takes place.
The Pi Mile (5K) Run is sponsored by Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society. The event’s proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics.
The race began as a service project four years ago and is now Tau Beta Pi’s “gimmick,” Hannah Friedman said. She said the chapter is active in the community and does service projects every year.
Friedman said Pi Miles is a great way to give back to the community and to raise money for an important cause.
She said the race is “A lot of fun. You don’t have to be a top runner to come out and enjoy the race.”
So far over 100 people have registered, and the number is expected to rise. The amount of pre-registrations is up from previous years, and if registration on race day goes as expected, this will be the largest Pi run ever.
Door prizes will be handed out as well as awards for the top two finishers in five different age groups. The age groups are 18 and under, 19-25, 26-35, 36-45 and 46 and up.
In addition, the top three male and female finishers will receive recognition.
Anyone who would like to run can register on Saturday morning before the race kicks off at 8:30 a.m. from the Campanile.
The entry fee is $12. For the registration fee, each runner will receive a Pi Mile t-shirt and a continental breakfast at the conclusion of the race.
Everyone is encouraged to participate to benefit not only the Special Olympics, but themselves.
