“Planning for a New Church — How Do We Make Good Choices?” will be a series of lectures conducted by a professor of art history at Louisiana State University this fall at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Catholic Student Center.

Marchita Mauck, professor and consultant of church building and renovation, will conduct the lectures.

Architecture students interested in the process of church building and renovation should attend the upcoming lectures, Bobby LeBlanc, church business administrator, said.

A presentation will be held Monday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the lower lounge of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Subsequent conversations will be held on Monday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1:15 p.m.

The four-meeting series will cover topics such as how and why church design is different from age to age, how the way sacraments are celebrated effect worship space and how special places and church treasures increase and nourish private prayer.

“These presentations would be of interest to anyone interested in church architecture, or the history of church architecture,” LeBlanc said.

Along with Mauck, Father Don Neumann of Galveston, Texas, will be assisting with several of the presentations. Neumann has been involved in church renovation across the nation, LeBlanc said.

A $5 million fund-raising campaign was recently completed in St. Thomas Aquinas’ efforts to expand and renovate its current facilities.

Mauck, the consulting liturgist for the project, will be working closely with the church staff and parish as well as committees and architects to renovate the facilities.

Mauck is the well-known author of several books, including “Places of Worship: A Guide to Building and Renovations.”
