Approved tuition hike
October 16, 1997
To the students of Iowa State:
Yesterday the Board of Regents voted to increase our tuition by 3.9 percent. We lost on that, but it doesn’t mean we have to like it.
We did have some important issues raised by our student regent, Lisa Ahrens, regarding the amount of our tuition that goes toward financial aid and the university’s accountability to us.
Several other Regents voiced the same concerns. I believe these issues are very important to us as ISU students. The GSB Cabinet, Senate and I are going to begin to work on these issues.
The University of Iowa Student Government surveyed their students this past month to determine what they wanted their tuition increase to go toward.
I am planning to start the same thing so we can let the Regents and President Jischke know what we see as priorities for the money that we spend at ISU.
By doing this, I hope to have these priorities met by future tuition increases. Along with finding your priorities for tuition, I am also planning on proposing that more of our tuition money goes toward financial aid.
We, the GSB, are going to start working on this now, so we can provide you with some answers as to where our tuition money goes and give you an opportunity to provide input to the university.
Rob Wiese
GSB President
