Veishea’s future will be decided today

Although the alcohol-free issue for Veishea 1998 arouses controversy on campus and Veishea’s future is still not certain, applications for the committees still get wide support among students at Iowa State.

Ben Dohrmann, Veishea general co-chairman, said applications are going well and some positions have been filled already.

Dohrmann said the alcohol-free issue only attracts more spotlights and discussion from the media, which in no way stops students from joining the committees.

“As long as students support Veishea, we don’t have to worry about the final decision on alcohol,” Dohrmann said.

President Martin Jischke will announce the final decision on the future of Veishea today at 3 p.m. in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union.

The Veishea Executive Board, which was selected earlier this fall, plans to fill approximately 150 positions, completing 13 Veishea committees.

Dohrmann said all 23 members of the Executive Board are ISU students who will work as co-chairs of different committees, which include the open-house, parade and peer security committees.

“The Board is looking for committee members who are dedicated to re-creating and planning Veishea 1998. We need students who want to return the focus of Veishea to where it belongs — showcasing the talents and accomplishments of Iowa State students,” Dohrmann said.

Kathryn Whitaker, working with Dohrmann as general co-chair, said

her duty is to facilitate meetings of all committees and to make sure each committee does its job well.

Dohrmann said he would like to change the image of the event and to see more student participation in it.

Applications for Veishea 1998 committees and position descriptions are available in the Student Activities Center and the West Student Office Space in the Memorial Union.

Applications must be returned to the West Student Office reception desk by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
