A lack of consideration
October 13, 1997
I am a representative in the political science class that has been researching and following the Veishea issue. First, I would like to state that President Jischke denied our presentation that we prepared and wanted to introduce at the Veishea forum.
I personally do not know the reasoning behind the denial of our request, but Jischke certainly did not want to hear our suggestions.
The political science group researched and weighed solutions that we took time to develop. We collected data and resources to support our knowledge of the subject. Some of our main ideas included moving Veishea to central campus, permits for parties, increasing fines and moving Veishea to Homecoming.
We presented our ideas to a more empathetic ear, GSB, who debated our ideas, but still found them to be an improvement on the negative effect of our traditional event.
I understand the situation that Iowa State is in as far as a violent affair, but does Jischke need to go to the extreme of excluding the most important tradition that alumni will never forget and future students have yet to experience?
As a senior, I will never forget my experiences at Veishea and the effect it has over every student right before finals. Do we want this to cease? Jischke has control over the decision, but he did not take the time to listen to the students who are trying to make a difference. He did allow us to voice our opinion, but he did not consider our ideas and give the students a chance to make a decision. In my personal opinion, Jischke is insensitive and overbearing.
