Why the abrupt change?
October 14, 1997
What ever happened to due process? Everyone knew the Board of Regents had proposed a tuition increase as well as an increase in computer fees at Iowa’s three state universities. But didn’t they tell us that they weren’t going to vote on the propsed increase until November?
So why in the world are they voting on the increase this Thursday instead of next month like they said?
This is just another one of those cases where the Board of Regents seems to have their own agenda. It appears they have no idea how their decisions effect students.
Whether the tuition increase is a necessary one is an issue for another time, this is about the right to be heard. After all, the tuition increase not only effects current students, but future ones as well.
If the Regents are trying to silence any opposition, they may have taken the wrong approach. Calling a vote on such a volatile issue a month ahead of time is not a way to silence critics. It is only a way to infuriate them.
Why change the meeting time? What does it accomplish? Is the vote so important that it couldn’t wait a month?
And what about our own student representative to the Regent? Where was she during all this mess? Was it a surprise to her, or did she agree with the idea?
Someone on the board needs to answer some questions, and someone on GSB needs to be asking them. Because right now it looks like there is a major oversight going on and it has nothing to do with money.
Last time we checked, the Regents are supposed to do what is best for Iowa’s colleges.
While they may feel this includes a tuition increase, as public officials it means they have a public to answer and listen to.
As members of that public, we don’t feel like our issues are being paid much attention to.
