Agriculture banquet to recognize alumni
October 31, 1997
Iowa State alumni and Iowa leaders in agriculture will be recognized at the Alpha Zeta’s (AZ) annual initiation banquet Sunday night.
AZ is a national agricultural honorary fraternity with a 77-year-old Wilson chapter at ISU.
As part of its centennial celebration, the national fraternity created an honor roll for leaders in agriculture from across the nation.
From more than 500 nominations, the AZ Centennial Honor Roll chose to recognize 100 fraternity members and 100 nonmembers who are leaders in agriculture.
The members of the AZ Centennial Honor Roll were recognized this summer at the society’s national conclave at Ohio State University. Members of the ISU chapter came back from the conclave and wanted to honor the members with Iowa connections, said Arden Campbell, chapter adviser and a professor of agronomy.
“Iowa is a real leader in agriculture and ag education and that shows with so many prominent leaders in ag throughout the nation [who] have Iowa ties,” Campbell said.
Matt Ernst, chancellor of AZ and a senior in ag business, said ISU was well represented on the honor roll with nine alumni members and 13 members with strong Iowa ties.
“The College of Ag and the Wilson Chapter have a rich heritage and tradition of producing great leaders in agriculture,” Ernst said.
“We are happy to be able to recognize the people selected for the honor roll.”
There will be 10 members of the AZ Centennial Honor Roll in attendance at the ISU chapter banquet.
Five alumni members will come from as far as West Virginia to receive recognition.
The honorees include Robert Maxwell, a professor emeritus at West Virginia University; Lumir Dostal, a farmer from Marion; Ken Larson, an ISU professor emeritus in agronomy; Dwight Seegmiller, president and CEO of Hills Bank & Trust Company in Iowa City; Arnold Skromme, a retired professional engineer with John Deere in Moline, Ill.
The nonfraternity members are Iowa community leaders representing various fields. Carol Bodensteiner of Des Moines is president of CMF&Z advertising agency. Tom Davis of Des Moines is director of advertising sales for Successful Farming Magazine. David Dukes of Bedford was the founder of E.A.R.T.H., a farmer’s conservation organization. David Garst of Coon Rapids works in the seed industry as an agricultural consultant. Herb Plambeck of Des Moines is an agricultural communicator.
Along with the honor-roll recognition, AZ will hold its annual initiation.
The fraternity will also present a collection of slides on chapter history.
