Take responsibility
October 27, 1997
Along with any privilege comes responsibility. Being allowed to drive a car, we need to know the rules of the road and be safe drivers Being allowed to have sex, we need to know about birth control, STDs and snuggling. Being allowed to drink, we need to know when to stop drinking.
Alcohol is getting a bad rap because of the idiots who use it. It is not necessarily true that you need to be 21 to be “old enough” to drink, because there are a lot of 18-year-olds who are very responsible drinkers. There are also a lot of 21-year-olds who are not. Either way, we need to start pointing our fingers at the users rather than our old friend, the beer.
Because of idiots who drink more than excessive amounts or in any other manner which lacks responsibility, alcohol is now on its way to being banned from Veishea, and the banning probably won’t stop there.
The next step will be to ban alcohol from the university altogether. Eventually, even the bars will be dry. It just isn’t cool to walk into Cy’s and yell, “Bartender, a round of Shirley Temples for everybody!”
Now, not only is the blame taken off the idiot who isn’t responsible for his own actions, it is also placed on five others who must suffer substantial penalties for his stupidity.
Remember this if you ever get a DWI. You can become insanely rich if you sue Budweiser for producing the beer that caused you to get pulled over for playing PacMan with the dots in the center of the road.
This is where the theory of Alcoholic Darwinism comes into play. Let us drink. The stupid people who don’t know when to quit will suffer their consequences. It’s their own fault, so they should suffer — be it a hangover, a night in jail, or a terminally-grouchy liver.
These people need to take responsibility for their own actions, so stop making decisions for them. True, they don’t seem to be able to make intelligent decisions for themselves, but if so, hopefully they’ll weed themselves out of the evolutionary chain.
Realize, then, that alcohol doesn’t cause problems, idiots do.
