Ten reasons to tune into Moss Pit Radio

Corey Moss

Yep yep. It’s true. On Friday morning The Moss Pit will venture into another form of mass media — the radio. Iowa State’s own KURE has offered the Friday morning slot to none other than me.

Now, it’s no secret KURE’s fan base is … let’s be honest, KURE doesn’t have a fan base. Well, that sucks, and if there’s one goal I have for the year, other than interviewing Vanilla Ice, it is to get Iowa State students to listen to our own station.

I have a few friends that attend the University of Iowa, as I’m sure we all do, and over there in Hawkeye Country, everyone listens to their campus station. And you see, I don’t like it when Iowa is better than us at anything.

And really, KRUI is not better than KURE. Iowa’s station just has more student support than Iowa State’s does. But that will change.

I have taken it upon myself to come up with 10 good reasons to listen to KURE or at least Moss Pit Radio on Friday mornings from 8 to 10.

No. 1 — Like Howard Stern, I was a geek in high school. (My first varsity letter was in Pep Club.) And like Howard Stern, I will become the king of morning radio. If that means having beautiful naked women come into the studio, then the residents of Friley are in for an exciting year.

No. 2 — Amy sucks. Case in point: that incredibly annoying “hippo chrissy” commercial KKDM played 1,000 times this summer. Amy is about as good of a radio personality as Jim Walden was a coach.

No. 3 — I have lots of cool friends in the music industry, both local (35″ Mudder, Good Things, The Nadas) and national (Local H, Sister Soleil, 311), and promise to have all these cool people on my show.

No. 4 — David has been my favorite “Beverly Hills, 90210” character since the very first episode, when he was the nerdy freshman DJ.

No. 5 — I don’t have to be all political and make fun of the president and all his little friends just so people will listen to me. Mosscow sounds better than Mancow anyway.

No. 6 — Hangovers. You’ll have one. I may have one (no classes on Friday). And Moss Pit Radio is the perfect KURE. (I know that was lame, but I had to play off the “cure” thing at least once.)

No. 7 — After watching “Pump Up The Volume” for the first time when I was a kid, I spent the next two weeks pretending to have my own pirate radio station. Not to mention, I can do a great Christian Slater. “Everywhere I look, it seems like someone’s getting butt-surfed by the system. So be it.”

No. 8 — (Here comes the generic radio station claim) Moss Pit Radio will play music you can’t hear anywhere else. We’re talking Local H covering Peter Frampton, Toad The Wet Sprocket doing “MMM Bop” and, of course, the coolest imports from the Beastie Boys, Sebadoh and Smashing Pumpkins.

No. 9 — “Name Your Shacker,” “My Roommate Sucks,” and all of the crazy wack funky games I plan to play on the air.

No. 10 — Where else can you hear “Ice Ice Baby” at 8 a.m. every Friday morning?

So there you have it. Ten good reasons to listen to KURE on Friday mornings.

In case you didn’t know, KURE is found at 88.5 on the FM dial. It’s a non-commercial radio station, meaning (you guessed it) there are no commercials.
