Volleyball to make magic at Hilton

Even though the Iowa State basketball season is just two months away, the ISU volleyball team brings its magic to Hilton Coliseum this weekend.

The Cyclones will host the Iowa State Invitational on Friday, Sept. 12, and Saturday, Sept. 13.

The team currently owns a 6-0 record after winning both the Creighton Tournament and the Hofstra Tournament thus far.

Teams at this year’s invitational include Rutgers, New Mexico, Central Michigan and Iowa. The tournament will be in a round-robin format.

“This is our toughest competition to date,” Coach Jackie Nunez said. “It will be a good test to show us all the areas we will need to improve on.”

ISU faces Rutgers at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The Scarlets enter the tournament with a 6-1 record, posting victories over Fordham, St. Peters and Virginia Commonwealth last weekend.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

ISU then plays New Mexico at 8 p.m.

New Mexico is 2-4 and went 1-2 in its own tournament last weekend. The series record is even at 1-1. New Mexico won the last contest in 1995, 3-1.

The Cyclones continue tournament play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Central Michigan. Central Michigan picked up two wins last weekend and is 2-4 in the young season.

ISU has beaten Central Michigan two of the three times the teams have met.

The last match of the tournament features ISU and Iowa at 8 p.m.

Iowa went 2-1 in its own tournament last weekend and is 2-1 overall.

The Cyclones will look to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Hawkeyes at last year’s Iowa State Invitational. Iowa leads the all-time series, 20-16.

“We always look forward to playing the Hawkeyes,” Nunez said. “We beat them in five last spring and it should be a fun, exciting, competitive game.”

All matches will be played at Hilton Coliseum, and admission to the tournament is free to all.
