It’s an honor
September 2, 1997
Troy Davis and Fred Hoiberg are a few Iowa State athletes who excelled in their sport during their collegiate years.
However, their accomplishments have yet to match those of Dan Gable.
Gable was one of several former university athletes and coaches inducted into the Iowa State Athletic Hall of Fame this past weekend.
Many have heard his name, but have always associated it with the University of Iowa, not ISU.
Gable wrestled for ISU, but his accomplishments go way beyond that.
He won a gold medal in 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, making his way to the top platform on the medal stand without giving up a single point.
He later accepted the offer to coach wrestling at Iowa, a job he dedicated his life to for the past two decades.
He was also a coach during the Summer Olympics several years ago.
ISU should be proud to have Gable associated with Cyclone wrestling. After all, he is no ordinary figure in the sport or at ISU.
In the state of Iowa, Gable is a household name. In the nation, he is an icon in the sport of wrestling.
The university should be applauded for honoring all the athletes, especially Gable, by inducting them into its Athletic Hall of Fame.
After all, it is an honor bestowed only among those, like Gable, whose hard work, determination and heart are applauded by a success rarely experienced.
We applaud Gable.
