Broaden your horizons
September 8, 1997
Iowa State students have an opportunity to witness a true “hero” as Chinese activist Harry Wu will speak in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union tonight.
This is a chance for students to come face-to-face with a man who has raised human rights awareness worldwide.
Wu, who will be speaking on the conditions within labor camps in China and Tibet, was held captive for 19 years in 12 different forced labor camps.
In 1995, Wu attempted to return to China and was arrested by the Chinese government. He was sentenced to 15 years but later was expelled as a result of a international campaign launched on his behalf.
Since his release, he continues to speak out against the abuse of human rights and the Chinese government.
Wu, executive director of the Laogai [forced labor] Research Foundation, a non-profit organization which documents happenings inside labor camps, has testified before various Congressional committees and other national governmental bodies.
Wu is a remarkable man who has become a recognized leader among groups and organizations such as Students for a Free Tibet and Amnesty International.
Not only will students who attend the speech witness firsthand the horrendous conditions within labor camps in China and Tibet, but they will hear from a man who has experienced grotesque conditions while in captivity.
All ISU students should know who Wu is, what he stands for and what he believes in.
We think ISU students should broaden their awareness of the world around them and attend Wu’s speech.
It isn’t everyday that someone like Harry Wu stops in Ames. So take advantage of the opportunity and go see Harry Wu.
