Tossed materials get second life
September 8, 1997
As a companion to the “In a Man’s Brain: Images of Women” exhibit currently on display at the Brunier Art Museum, Ames artist Marilyn Annin will exhibit her work focusing on her portrayal of women.
“I am a contemporary female artist and was invited to respond to the main show,” Annin said. “My commentary comes from what I’ve experienced as a woman and an artist.”
Annin’s exhibit, which begins today, will feature five non-wearable garments on welded steel armature.
Each is a metaphor or commentary for a specific attitude or culture.
The works portray satirical and humorous points of view and symbolic issues, Annin said.
“Only one piece is new. The other works have been done in the recent past and I’m now bringing them together as a response to the show,” she said.
The materials used to create these pieces are usually “recycled materials” including neck ties, buttons, safety pins, ribbon and lace, Annin said.
“I use things that are often tossed and give a second life to them,” she added. “All the materials have a symbolic value.”
Annin has been an artist for 25 years and has been working in three-dimensional art for the last 10 years.
Her works have been on display in Minneapolis, Chicago, Madison and Des Moines.
The future of Annin’s work is to continue in the same direction.
“I already know where I’ve been,” she said. Now she wants to continue on the path on which she is going.
Annin’s work will be on display at the Brunier Art Museum from Sept. 9 until Jan. 4.
The museum is located in Room 209 in the Scheman Building.
