Soccer team splits weekend

It was a weekend filled with intensity for the Iowa State women’s soccer team.

The Cyclones now own a 2-2 game record, after splitting a pair of games in Colorado.

ISU defeated the United States Air Force Academy Falcons in Colorado Springs on Friday, but lost in double overtime Sunday to the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder.

ISU’s first goal came early on Friday against the Falcons by Jun Shen at the game’s 20:54 mark off an assist from Dawn Weber.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime, and remained a defensive battle most of the game.

Late in the game an attack by Jo Hinks, last year’s leading Cyclone scorer, was stopped by Air Force.

Not to be shut down, Hinks fought back and assisted Barb Lavergne with a goal, which led to the final score of 2-1 for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones took a total of four shots on goal, but two were good for points.

In Friday’s game, goalie Hayley Mercer recorded six saves in the victory, upping her season total to 16.

ISU’s win left the Air Force with an 0-3 early-season record.

Sunday the Cyclones opened Big 12 Conference play against the Colorado Buffaloes with a tough 2-1 loss in double overtime.

This was the second-straight time Colorado beat ISU in conference play.

Sunday’s game remained scoreless at halftime, until the Buffaloes attacked at 52 minutes with a goal.

The goal spurred the Cyclones on, quickly coming back with a goal of their own on an assist from Shen to Lavergne, tying the game at 1-1.

The teams battled into double, sudden-death overtime.

The game finally ended with a Colorado goal after 116:53 minutes of play.

ISU had 18 shots-on-goal while Colorado only took eight.

However, Colorado’s eight shots were more powerful.

The Buffaloes’ win bettered their stats to 1-3.

“[Sunday] we had three good chances to win the game,” coach Cathy Klein said.

“We were caught in a mental breakdown. We have a lot of youth and excitement. That was to our advantage and disadvantage this weekend.”

“It was sad we didn’t come away with [Sunday’s] win,” Klein said.

“Sunday we played with heart,” Lavergne said. “There was a lack of that in Friday’s game.”

Lavergne said this weekend the team used its strengths of knocking the ball, looking forward and settling the game at the team’s own pace.

Klein said Lavergne was “brilliant” over the weekend. “She won the Air Force game,” Klein said.

She also mentioned Mercer as a valuable asset in both games.

Additionally, Hinks and Lindsey Rector played well in Sunday’s game, Klein said.

Klein said the team will now focus on building mentally and physically game by game.

This weekend, the Cyclones will spend another weekend away from home.

They travel to Texas where they will face Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

Lavergne said the team will be prepared for the two matches.

“We will be ready for next weekend,” she said. “We have to play strong and hard all through the conference games.”
