Over the weekend, the Iowa State volleyball team came home from the Virginia Invitational with one win and two losses.
Junior outside hitter Colleen Henican was named to the all-tournament team. Henican has been recognized as an all-tournament player in all four tournaments the Cyclones have participated in this fall.
“We played well on Friday but we didn’t come out on Saturday with the high level of intensity we needed to beat those teams,” said Assistant Coach Sarah Lewis.
The Cyclones began the weekend on Sept. 19 with a three-game victory against Northeastern, 15-2, 15-9, 15-10. Henican led the offense with 17 kills.
Sophomore Andrea Thul was close behind with 12 kills and freshman Jennifer Collins recorded 10. Junior Julie McGrath set 46 assists.
Three Cyclones finished in the double digits with digs; Henican had 15, McGrath tallied 12 and Thul registered 10. Thul also served a team high of four aces.
ISU did not fare as well on the second day of the tournament, losing to Villanova, 17-15, 15-7, 8-15 and 15-6. Henican led the team again in both kills, 18, and digs, 21.
“Even though we lost, we did some positive things over the weekend,” Henican said. “However, our inexperience showed at times because we made some critical mistakes.”
Thul added 13 kills and senior Heidi Rogers nailed 12 kills and scooped 12 digs. In the final game, the Cyclones faced host Virginia and lost 11-15, 17-15, 4-15 and 12-15.
Henican continued to dominate both the offense and defense. She led in kills with 24 and Thul followed with 10.
“Colleen Henican played consistently throughout the weekend,” Lewis said.
McGrath recorded 32 assists while freshman Sara Walters added 16.
Defensively, Henican recorded 18 digs and McGrath and Rogers each received 10.
The Cyclones open conference play on Friday, September 26, against Baylor at 7:30 p.m. in the Forker Building. On Saturday, the team will play Texas Tech.
“Everyone is excited about starting the Big 12 season. It is kind of like starting over, and we are all ready for the challenges that lie ahead,” Henican said.
