SUB: catoring to the poor
September 8, 1997
For a cheap date, or to show off a talent friends may not appreciate, look no further than the Student Union Board.
SUB is a student organization that plans, produces and promotes fine arts, performing arts, films, variety shows, poetry readings and other activities at the Memorial Union and throughout campus.
Cafe Au Lait, one of the more popular SUB activities, brings people from different ethnic backgrounds together and allows students and faculty to showcase their diverse talents in poetry, storytelling and dance.
It is a “performance event,” Jamila Pree, SUB multicultural director, said.
The event is free and coffee and pastries are served afterwards.
The great value — $2 and free popcorn — make SUB films a favorite around campus. The SUB films committee strives to bring a variety of films to the Iowa State community that would not otherwise be shown in the area.
Films usually evolve around a theme. In the past, SUB planned a Chinese theme featuring Chinese films and food. This semester’s theme is “Insect Horror Film Festival” and will feature “Phase IV” and the 1958 edition of “The Fly.”
Another upcoming event of SUB will be a performance by Jack White. White is a pocket billiard and trick shot artist who will be returning to the recreation center (in the basement of the Memorial Union) to show the tricks of his trade.
SUB activities are funded by student fees allocated to the Union, and by self-generated money earned through the activities SUB promotes.
Activities are planned by a board of directors consisting of 12 student directors and four student advisors. Director head their own committees and plan the semester’s activities.
“Any additional help is always appreciated,” Renee Uecker, SUB advertising director, said. “We are always looking for people to become involved in SUB committees.”
