A true Cyclone
September 7, 1997
“A true Cyclone: Gary Thompson” — a good title in Drew Harris’ recent Daily article. However, maybe even more fitting would be to refer to him as a true Cyclone and a true human being.
Although Thompson was inducted into the Iowa State Athletic Hall of Fame, and is known by many for his feats on the court, his greatness goes far beyond any arena. Last semester, I invited Thompson to my journalism class with high expectations of the legend. He surpassed them all.
His wisdom is evident in the way he cherishes honesty, integrity and hard work. In a world where most people are looking out for “numero uno,” Thompson puts others first. He is a true family man, which I have seen in his sons Rick and Scott, who follow in their father’s footsteps of being a gentleman.
Kudos and congratulations to Gary Thompson, a great athlete and a great man. It is almost sad to see, though, that a story about a weed growing near a sorority last summer grabbed front page headlines, while true news about a hero and possible role model is allowed to slip to the back of the paper.
