Veishea alternatives needed
September 9, 1997
At the Government of the Student Body meeting tonight a resolution for a dry Veishea will be presented on the agenda as new business.
The resolution will not be discussed and voted on until next Wednesday’s meeting, But before a decision is made by senators, all Iowa State students need to consider alternatives for having a safer Veishea celebration.
The decision can’t be made just by GSB senators, the fraternity and sorority councils and other student leaders. All students need to have their say and speak out about their feelings about Veishea.
We agree that something needs to be done to make Veishea a safer celebration. But will asking students to be alcohol-free during the weekend solve the problem?
Will the entire student body abide by the pledge if taken?
Ultimately the decision is up to the entire student body.
Students need to come to next Wednesday’s GSB meeting to discuss their feelings and ideas about the future of Veishea.
Hopefully before the GSB resolution is passed, senators can get a better perspective of their constituents by going to the open forum on Sept.22.
Veishea is a tradition most ISU students do not want to give up. But the only way to come to a solution is for students to speak their minds.
If a dry Veishea is the solution to a safer Veishea, students need to make an honest pledge.
If not, other alternatives need to be suggested and discussed soon.
