Travel the world
September 1, 1997
Have you ever dreamed of traveling the world? You probably think that you can do it when you’re older, when you have more financial stability. However, the time to travel is now.
Most of us are pretty career-oriented. We are at Iowa State so we can get a good job someday. A lot of us don’t look into traveling to another country. Finances are tight, and it can be difficult to choose a place to visit.
Students across the world are learning about other cultures by traveling. When you’re a student, it’s easier to travel. Backpacking is cheaper than traveling when you are retired. You are more flexible as a student. Because your budget isn’t too large, your standards for accommodations and meals are lower. Students can sleep in low-cost
hostels or camp throughout their journeys. It’s also easier to get around as a student. Travel and touring discounts are abound. Obviously, it’s a lot easier to climb the Eiffel Tower when you are 20 years old than when you are 70.
Going abroad means learning more about a culture when you are part of it, rather than being lectured about it. You learn how other people live and interact in society. You catch glimpses of history and bring them back home with you to show others. Your perception of the world changes. You become more aware of the world. It makes you a well-rounded person.
Although you may not have the time, finances or desire to travel, ISU has opportunities you should check out. You never know what you might discover.
