After a weekend of conference play in Texas, the Cyclone women’s soccer team came home empty handed, dropping to an overall record of 2-4 and a conference record of 0-3.

Friday Iowa State faced strong competition, playing the No.5 rated Aggies of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

The Aggies’ offense proved to be too much for the Cyclone defense. The game resulted in a 2-0 Texas A&M victory over ISU.

The Cyclones took zero shots on goal in the first half. The Aggies’ first goal came at 15:25, and the game remained 1-0 through the rest of the first half.

The Aggies outshot the Cyclones the entire game, 27-2.

The second half proved busy for sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Mercer, who fought off Aggie attacks, recording eight saves during the game.

The last goal in the game was scored with 40 seconds left to play, which the Cyclones failed to defend, and it resulted in a final score of 2-0 for Texas A&M.

“We got there scared on Friday, we know we could have done better, but we did play well,” said sophomore Barb Lavergne, who recorded one shot on goal during Friday’s game against the Aggies.

Sunday ISU traveled to Austin where they faced the University of Texas Longhorns.

The Cyclones allowed the Longhorns three goals during the game, and Texas took the game with a final score of 3-0.

The first half of the game was a battle up that ran up and down the field, with Texas leading 1-0 at halftime.

Texas then claimed the game in the second half, scoring two goals in 23 seconds.

At goal, Mercer made some big saves, including three one-to-one stops, helping keep the Cyclones in the game.

Mercer recorded 7 saves and senior Lauren Muser tallied two.

Lavergne felt that the team played with more heart on Friday than on Sunday.

“It’s tough working hard, then being let down. We need to work hard the whole game, but we will put it behind and keep going,” she said.

ISU heads to Lincoln, Neb., on Thursday to face the No.4 rated Cornhuskers.

On Sunday, the team travels back across the state to Iowa City, where they will battle intrastate rival Iowa Hawkeyes.
