Who’s the real artist?
September 9, 1997
This morning (Monday, September 8) I went about my daily ritual of reading the ISU Daily when I reached the column of the ever venerable Corey Moss.
For those of you who don’t remember Mr. Moss’ column, he gave the loving public his view and review of last week’s MTV Video Music Awards.
My normal reaction to Mr. Moss’ columns is wonder — wondering how in the hell he got himself a column, but today, my reaction was that of anger.
In a display of his extreme intelligence, Mr. Moss wrote: “There was the breathtaking opening of Puff Daddy’s tribute to the Notorious B.I.G., “I’ll Be Missing You,” which featured none other than Sting singing the “Every Breath You Take” chorus.
“How did this memorable event come about? My guess is Sting was in need of a little career boost and who better to give it to him than Mr. Hollywood himself: Puff Daddy.”
The question I pose to you, Mr. Moss, is: Since when does Sting need a career boost? The man has been selling records since before Puffy could rap.
Why is it Sting who needs the career boost when it was Puffy and Faith Evans who used “Every Breath You Take” in order to make their tribute to B.I.G.?
If anything, this has been a career boost for Puffy. All you hear on stations like 107.1 nowadays is “I’ll be Missing You”.
So, Mr. Moss, why is it that you seem to think that Sting (one of the more popular musicians, as well as a hell of an actor) is in such dire need of a career boost?
I am very interested in your reasoning behind this “guess” of yours, because it is obviously not an educated guess.
My advice to you, Mr. Moss, is make sure what you are saying doesn’t make you look like a horse’s ass … especially since your words are read by thousands of students — and we wouldn’t want them all to have the same opinion of you that I do.
