The Iowa State volleyball team is off to its best start ever after adding three more wins and another tournament title to its early-season stats.

The Cyclones improved to 6-0 after claiming this weekend’s Hofstra’s Asics/Spalding Volleyball Invitational in Hempstead, NY.

“We finished exactly like we hoped and expected,” coach Jackie Nunez said.

Cyclone juniors Colleen Henican and Julie McGrath were named to the all-tournament team and freshman middle-blocker Jennifer Collins was named tournament MVP.

“Jen had a great weekend,” Nunez said. “She improves every week and plays like a seasoned veteran. Her MVP honors were well deserved.”

Collins finished the tournament with 35 kills and 10 blocks.

In the first match, ISU faced undefeated George Washington and won in four games: 15-5, 10-15, 15-12 and 15-9. Henican led the Cyclones with 19 kills and 14 digs.

Collins followed with 16 kills and a .467 hitting percentage. Andrea Thul and Virginia Hoss nailed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

McGrath led all players with 49 assists. Collins led the Cyclone defense with five blocks while Thul added four.

“George Washington was the team I was most concerned about, and we were able to beat them in four,” Nunez said.

Next ISU challenged Central Connecticut State and won in three games: 15-2, 15-6, 15-6. Henican again led the team with nine kills and Collins recorded seven kills, four blocks and six digs. Central Connecticut’s record fell to 1-5.

In the final match, ISU faced tournament host Hofstra and defeated the Flying Dutchwomen in three games: 16-14, 15-10 and 15-6.

The Cyclone attack was led by Henican with nine kills while Collins added seven and Thul notched five. McGrath set 21 assists. Defensively, Henican scooped up 21 digs.

The Cyclones host the ISU Volleyball Invitational this weekend, Sept. 12 and 13, at Hilton Coliseum. New Mexico, Central Michigan and intrastate rival Iowa are scheduled to compete.
