Cy’s celebrates 20 years in Ames

From ties to tie-dye, the oldest bar in Campustown has had a “come-as-you-are” atmosphere since 1977.

Proudly celebrating 20 years in it roost, Cy’s Roost, named after Cy himself, has held special promotions and events throughout the year, manager Paul DeVries said.

“We’ve had some T-shirt designs and some ‘best of’ specials from the best specials from the past six or seven years,” DeVries said.

“Best of” specials included beer- glove night.

Gloves with the fingers cut off were available for $1, followed by $1 pints, DeVries said.

It began as a twist to other local bars’ mug night.

Other celebration specials include bringing back the taps of 1977, including Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Style and Milwaukee’s Best.

“We’re going to sell them totally cheap. Cheaper than cheap,” DeVries said. “Because they don’t cost anything anymore.”

Cy’s has established itself as a Campustown icon and alumni bar, DeVries said. “Anyone who has graduated in the last 20 years still comes in.”

He attributes the bar’s success to not being a typical Campustown bar.

“We’re not much of a bandwagon kind of place,” owner Patrick Green said. “We just don’t jump on the bandwagon.”

The staff also prides itself on the fact that it maintains a laid-back atmosphere where everyone is welcome — and there is never a cover charge.

While celebrating its successes, Cy’s is concentrating on next year’s anniversary.

Most of the promotions are being held off until next year, DeVries said.

“We’ll be doing the rolling-off-of-the-drink thing,” Green said.

It will follow the “we’re 21 now and we can really drink,” DeVries said.

Alongside the added specials, Cy’s is continuing its weekly specials including the popular “starving students” nights.

“This was created so students could get away from food service,” Green said. “Our most popular is Burger Baskets on Wednesday nights.”

However, starving students are not limited to burgers. Monday nights serve up chicken and Tuesday nights deliver steak.

Other weekly events include Campustown pool leagues on Monday nights.

“Anybody that is any good in Campustown plays in the league,” DeVries said.

And Thursday nights are “look like a woman” night.

“Anyone resembling a woman can drink wells all night for $3,” DeVries said.

FAC brings S.I.N. to Cy’s. Service Industry Night is for all those who work in the service industry.

Ranging from bartenders to servers, a pay stub is all you need to receive Cy’s employees’ prices.

Cy’s Roost, in connection with Don’s Deli and the Lost and Found Lounge, are located at 121 Welch Ave. Open hours are from 11 a.m until 2 a.m.
