Iowa State faces second suicide in three weeks

An Iowa State student was found dead at his home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday.

Douglas Conley, 19, of Ames was found by family members at about 1:30 p.m. Monday in the family’s home.

Ames police officers were called to 3816 Toronto St. early Monday afternoon.

Conley, who has been a student at ISU since the fall of 1996, was a second-year freshman majoring in chemistry, university officials said.

Conley’s death is still under investigation by the Story County Medical Examiner. Officials said no foul play is expected to be the cause of his death.

Conley is the second ISU student in three weeks to apparently commit suicide.

Gene Deisinger, assistant director of student counseling for ISU, said he has no reason to believe the recent suicide of Yusutomo Suzuki, an international student living in Friley Hall, is related to the death of Conley.

Suzuki, 20, was an international student from Japan. Suzuki died from severe head and internal injuries after he fell from a fifth floor window at Friley Hall.

His roommate, Christian Gunadirdja, said Suzuki was a quiet guy who was feeling stress about his Intensive English Program classes.

To prevent tragedies such as this, Deisinger said the counseling center advises students to turn to friends and family when circumstances in their lives are not going well.

“Many times [suicide] is a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” Deisinger said.

Deisinger said students should be aware of the numerous student support services offered by the university.
