In just one more night, the 1997-98 Government of the Student Body will resume its governing activities and shoulder the responsibilities of representing the student body.

One of the biggest responsibilities the senate has is allocating more than $1 million in student fees to the various groups and organizations on campus. The amount each group receives is based on a recommendation made by the GSB Finance Committee. The senate then votes whether or not to approve the allocation amount.

Obviously this is an important position and should not be filled with the first person to walk in off the street. Jeremy Williams was selected by then-recently- elected GSB President, Rob Wiese to take the cabinet position director of finance last year. William had a list of credentials and experience as tall as his body, but the Senate surprised many when they refused to approve Wiese’s appointment.

For Williams, president of the Towers Residence Association, it came as a blow.

This seemed to be a taste of things to come for Wiese and his relationship with GSB senators. With the first GSB meeting approaching Wednesday, Aug. 27, one wonders what to expect.

Many senators on GSB are cliquish, and when intruders try to join their group they retaliate. Jeremy Williams was an intruder. This isn’t the first time senators have rejected a person recommended by the newly elected president.

Before former GSB president Adam Gold’s reign, senators rejected his choice for director of finance, Todd Swanson. Now senators seem to favor Swanson for being this year’s director of finance. Why the change of heart? Senators should set aside their own personal feelings and vendettas, and choose the person who is most suitable, experienced and qualified for the job.
