August 24, 1997
Iowa State University’s Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Elizabeth Hoffman, has been appointed provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Hoffman stepped down from her position as dean on Friday, Aug. 19.
“We greatly appreciate Dean Hoffman’s dedication and the leadership she has provided to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” President Martin Jischke said.
Hoffman has been the dean of LAS since July 1993. Her salary for the position was $135,000. During her time as dean, private funds raised in LAS more than tripled, contracts and grants increased and new degree programs were created, university officials said.
“My time at Iowa State was very challenging,” Hoffman said. “We developed three new degree programs: preforming arts, woman studies and environmental science.”
Hoffman’s position at the University of IIlinois will begin November 1.
“UIC’s prestige is growing rapidly, and it has one of the nation’s largest academic medical centers,” Hoffman said. “This is an exciting opportunity.”
Hoffman is also an active researcher in the field of experimental economics, and she holds the rank of professor of economics and psychology at ISU.
She has also taught principles of economics and freshmen composition courses. Hoffman will be involved in these and other activities at ISU until Oct. 31.
“Elizabeth Hoffman has done a fine job over the last four years as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” Provost John Kozak said. “She has certainly made an impact. We wish her well in her new position.”
Prior to coming to Iowa State, Hoffman was at the University of Arizona, where she began in 1988 as a professor of economics and law.
In 1989, she was appointed associate dean of the Karl Eller Graduate School of Management and program director for the master of business administration.
Richard Hoffmann, professor of zoology and genetics and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at ISU, was named interim dean of LAS and will begin his position today.
“The college will be in expert hands under Dick Hoffmann’s guidance,” ISU Provost John Kozak said.
Hoffmann will hold the position of dean of LAS until a permanent dean is found.
