Taste Da Difference
August 27, 1997
Bonjour, friendly folks. If you’re looking for advice on where to eat this weekend, you’ve come to the right place.
Let me start by asking a question: When you want pizza, do you limit yourself to a select few joints and make your choice based solely on price? (Well, price and the hottest delivery drivers.)
I confess to the crime myself. But on the advice of a friend, I sauntered down Campustown and went to a real pizza place — da Vinci’s — for dinner. I haven’t eaten at da Vinci’s since my parents moved me into the dorms my freshman year. Ah, the memories…
Anyway, the Italian restaurant offers a wide variety of menu items including, but not limited to, pizza, pasta, hoagies and New York-style cheesecake. But it was the garlic cheese rolls that caught my attention.
Since there wasn’t anybody in line behind me, and the place wasn’t exactly busy at 7 p.m., I decided to ask my cashier to explain just what exactly the appetizer entailed.
He was more than happy to oblige my little Italian inquisition and told me the garlic cheese rolls were really good. He explained that they were made out of white hoagie buns and basted with a light garlic butter.
Four pieces only set you behind $1.49, but the marinara sauce for dipping is an extra $.45.
I appreciated the mouth-watering explanation and promptly added them to my order of a two- topping medium pizza for $8.69 and small drink for $.95. A friend of mine ordered a steak hoagie on wheat for $3.79.
While waiting for my pizza, I had time to take in my surroundings. OK — da Vinci’s claims to be an “Italian Sidewalk Cafe.” Did they pull it off?
Hmm, well, not unless you consider cabin-like wood paneling on three walls and a Little Italy wallpaper mural on the fourth.
Not to worry ’cause five short minutes later my pizza was ready. How did I know it was done? My name was shouted over the microphone, even though the cashier was just 10 feet away. Is there a Kim in the house? Come on DJ, pump this party!
It was a beautiful sight to behold: a 12-inch sausage and mushroom pizza with a light, flaky crust. The grease shimmered on top of the mozzarella cheese — not that there’s anything wrong with that. Maybe it’s ’cause I hadn’t eaten pizza in over two weeks, but the pizza was delicious!
If you’re not into the S&M — sausage and mushroom, that is — you may want to brave the house speciality — smoked turkey: “A deliciously different taste in pizza with creamy white alfredo sauce, smoked turkey, red onion, Canadian bacon and sliced tomatoes.”
da Vinci’s is pricey, but well worth the change of pace. I suggest you take advantage of coupons in the Daily or the College Coupon book to help pad your pocketbook.
da Vinci’s is located at 2514 Chamberlain St. Oh yeah, they do deliver if the order is $7.00 or more. But I don’t know how hot the drivers are…
4 stars out of five.
