Road crews get brighter uniforms to get attention

In an effort to improve safety in work zones, new traffic safety work wear is being worn by Iowa Department of Transportation maintenance and construction workers this summer.

Motorists should have little trouble spotting workers dressed in clothing made of bright yellow-green fabric with reflective orange bands. A vest or jacket and a hat will be worn for daytime work, and high visibility pants will be added for nighttime activities.

The clothing is intended to catch motorists’ attention and alert them of a work zone.

“They are a big improvement as far as safety,” said Sandra Larson, an Ames resident construction engineer.

Larson said all workers assigned to the construction project on Interstate 35 south of Ames will be wearing the new uniform. Other construction projects in central Iowa haven’t received the work wear yet, but Larson special ordered the clothes early. “I knew I really needed them.”

According to a DOT news letter, Iowa DOT safety officials will be evaluating the new safety apparel throughout the year for effectiveness, quality and comfort before deciding whether to expand the use to all DOT highway workers.

“We’re trying to find out what the public reaction will be,” said Fred Walker, a transportation safety engineer.

DOT employees, along with Employee Safety Coordinator Barb Mallon, have been trying to find improved ways to decrease work zone hazards. The new safety work wear is a result of their efforts.

“Workers put themselves at risk of personal injury every day and night. However, that risk can be lessened … Hopefully, [the new apparel] will reduce the number of deaths and injuries to workers and motorists,” Walker said in the news letter.

The DOT reminds motorists to slow down when they see road work ahead and obey all signs. Using defensive driving techniques is also recommended.
