The Iowa State’s women’s track coach has landed another state champion for his program. Andrew High School sprinter/jumper Barbara Szlendkova signed a national letter of intent to run for the Cyclones.

“She has the potential to become an excellent runner, even though she is not a Div. I national-champion caliber athlete right now,” said Iowa State head track coach Dick Lee.

Szlendkova was the state champion in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and in the long jump.

She ran the 200 in 25.09 seconds and the 400 in 56.22 seconds. Her Andrew High School 4 x 400 relay team finished second at the state meet.

In addition to her state long jump title with 18 feet, 5 1/2 inches, Szlendkova won this year’s Drake Relays long jump with a leap of 18-7.

“Her best events are the 400 and the long jump. But we don’t know for sure what events she is going to be competing in. We’ll have to see her in practice,” Lee said.

Although Szlendkova has signed on with the ISU track squad, Lee is still hot on the recruiting trail.

With many more potential college athletes still unsigned, it is hard to tell where the 1997-98 track squad will stand in the Big 12.

“We are still recruiting, and so we don’t really know right now. But we are looking forward to a good season,” Lee said.

Look for Szlendkova, among others to be named later, to contribute to the Cyclone women’s track squad.
