Former ISU coaches and athletes to be honored
June 16, 1997
Ten former Cyclone athletes and coaches will be honored for their outstanding contributions and achievements with an induction into the Iowa State Athletic Hall of Fame.
ISU Letterwinners Club President Arnie Gaarde announced in a press conference June 12 the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class, which was voted upon by a committee of former letterwinners, coaches and local media members. Gaarde said the club will induct the members August 29.
The 10 honorees include Clyde Williams, L.C. “Cap” Timm, Ed Bock, Nawal El Moutawakel-Bennis, Jim Doran, Gary Thompson, Harold Nichols, Dan Gable, Ron Galimore and Yobes Ondieki.
Hall of Famer Gary Thompson and Jim Doran Jr. attended last week’s conference and gave brief but emotional acceptance speeches.
Thompson, ISU’s first two-sport All-American, racked up a number of awards in basketball and baseball during his 1955-57 career.
“I’m truly indebted to [the committee] and feel very honored,” he said. “Iowa State has meant a lot to me, and I’ve always appreciated the support I’ve gotten from people. It’s something I’ll truly cherish.”
Football great Jim Doran made his mark at ISU in the 1949-50 seasons.
One of the best receivers in Big Seven history, Doran went on to devote 11 years to the NFL.
Jim Doran, Jr., also a former Cyclone football player, accepted the honor on behalf of his late father. “I know he would really appreciate this,” he said.
“He’s always followed Iowa State. . . I wish he could’ve been around to see the changes and the great things that are happening here.
“He was a tremendous football player, and this award would’ve meant a lot to him.”
The selection procedure was a long and detailed one. Committee members were given a list of more than 100 nominees from former letterwinners, and, after two months of deliberation, the committee narrowed the list to a top 10.
Committee member and ISU Director of Student-Athlete Services Steve McDonnell said the decision was a “grueling” process.
“A lot of hours were spent talking about these individuals,” he said. “It took some time, but I think we’ve come up with a representative class that speaks very highly of athletics at Iowa State.”
He said many athletes and coaches associated with the ISU athletic program were considered.
“There are a number of people who are deserving of this recognition,” McDonnell said. “We have a lot more possible inductees for the future years.”
The induction ceremony will be held in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union August 29.
The evening will begin with a social hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by a banquet dinner. Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs Pete Taylor will serve as master of induction ceremonies.
Tickets are available at the Jacobson Building. Letterwinners Club members may purchase seats for $20; tickets are available to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis for $20. For additional information, contact Rita Knight at 294-9324.
