Things are changing
June 16, 1997
As a gay man, I am excited by the Religious Liberty Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that is being pushed by the Christian Coalition. What sold me was the last line: “The government shall not … deny equal access to a benefit on account of religion.” This means that the same-sex couples married or joined in holy union in faiths that perform such ceremonies will actually get the marriage benefits to which they are entitled. The United Church of Christ, Quakers, Unitarian Universalists, Metropolitan Community Church, Reformed Judaism and even some Episcopal and Presbyterian congregations already support or perform same-sex marriages or unions.
And soon, with help from the Christian Coalition, those same-sex couples will become equal in the eyes of the law.
