Stop blaming us

Amy Madden and Carrie Walsh

“The reason: Uri Sellers —enough said.” This was the statement made about why the greek system at Iowa State should go dry like the University of Iowa. We are curious as to where you got your information that the death of Uri Sellers was related to the greek system. Yes, Uri Sellers was staying at a fraternity house but the tragedy occurred when he was returning from a party held off campus by non-greeks.

Why are you blaming it on us? It seems to us that he was on his way to the fraternity to get help, he obviously knew that would be a good place to turn. Going “dry” is a national trend among fraternities, and maybe the ISU greek system should look into it, but it will not solve all of the alcohol problems at Iowa State. We are curious as to your allegations regarding fraternities violating the dry RUSH rules. We do not understand how you would get any information about fraternities and RUSH infractions, this information is not public. All of this would be confidential information of the Judicial Board of the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils.

Please get your facts straight on dry fraternities before you start to publish your “facts” in a paper available to so many students. There is a difference between a dry fraternity and a dry house. Why did you fail to include the fact that another ISU fraternity will be dry by the year 2000, and that all of the sororities are dry? If anyone wants to help the greek system to come up with solutions for the problems we have, feel free to contact us. If you wish to publish information about the greek system, we would appreciate it if you ensured accuracy before making accusations or statements.

We are sincerely sorry about the loss of Uri Sellers and Matthew Garofalo, we do not mean to dredge up bad memories.
