Sports camps attract thousands

Iowa State University will host several thousand eager campers this summer.

Heather Horner, graduate student and an assistant camp coordinator, said ISU will host up to nine different athletic camps this year.

“We anticipate four to five thousand kids will participate in the camps,” Horner said.

The camps this summer will include baseball, swimming, tennis, boys and girls basketball, soccer, golf, softball, wrestling and volleyball.

“The boys basketball camps seem to attract the most campers,” she said. “The basketball camp can average 270 campers a week.”

Horner said all of the camps are sponsored by the ISU Athletic Department.

“The length depends on the camp. A camp will run a couple of days up to a week. They are all run differently,” she said.

There are different types of camps depending on the sport. There are individual and team sport camps — mainly for boys’ and girls’ basketball.

Horener said the cost of the camps can vary greatly.

“It depends if the camper is a commuter or a resident,” Horner said. “For example, for a kid to attend a boys’ basketball camp, a commuter will have to pay $195, while a resident will pay $265.”

A camper can also receive discounts for an early-bird entrance fee or a sibling discount. Golf camps may cost extra due to green fees.

While at camp, resident campers stay at different dorms on campus. Horener said the majority of the kids stay in Maple-Willow-Larch, Richardson Court Association and Helser Hall.

This week the Rec Center is hosting the Coach Floyd Basketball Camp.

“The camp is set up to teach the fundamentals of basketball,” said an ISU camp trainer. “The kids will be involved in three-on-three basketball tournaments, free-throw competitions and league play based on the campers’ ages.”

Horener said the football department held a camp last weekend.
