Ames hot spots: public pools

With the temperature rising and people having extra free time, the three Ames swimming pools have become — well, a hot spot.

Summer passes can be purchased at all three Ames pools. A pass enables the purchasers with access to the Municipal Pool, 20 St. & Ridgewood Ave., the Gateway Hills Pool, 1500 Gateway Hills Park Drive, and Carr Pool, 1610 Meadowlane Ave.

Bret Petersen, Carr Pool manager, said the price for the summer passes are $33 for adults, $28 for youth, and $91 for family. Non-residents of Ames have to pay $5 extra on top of the regular fees.

Day passes are also sold by the pools at $2 for adults, $1.50 for youth and senior citizens, and age 3 and under free, said Matt Gruvisich, Municipal Pool manager.

Each pool offers different attractions for their participants. Petersen said the Carr Pool has two slides, two lap lanes, a diving board and a wading pool.

A basketball hoop, a lap lane and a wading pool is offered at Gateway Hills Pool, said manager Alison Juhl.

The Municipal Pool is open all year long and is a indoor pool. This pool offers a diving board inside and a wading pool outside, Gruvisich said.

“I don’t feel we are at a disadvantage since we are an indoor pool. A lot of day cares bring their kids here to avoid the sun,” Gruvisich said.

Private pool parties are also popular at the Municipal Pool, and the usual charge is $60 for an hour and a half and an additional charge for more than one guard, said Gruvisich.

All three pools feel their attendance has been good so far, and the busiest times at the pools are around 1-4 p.m.

Petersen said 11-1 p.m. on the weekdays and 11-12 p.m. on weekends are used for lap swimming only at Carr Pool. Public hours are 1-8 p.m. on the weekdays and 12-8 p.m. on the weekends, he said.

Gateway Hills Pool offers lap swim from 12-1 p.m. and public hours are 1-7 p.m. everyday, said Juhl.

Gruvisich said the hours at the Municipal Pool consist of lap swimming from 12:15-1 p.m. on the weekdays and 12-1 p.m. on the weekends. Public hours are 1-8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and on weekends public swim is from 1-7 p.m.

“Swimming lessons are also offered from 9-12 p.m., and if an individual is interested they can sign up at our office,” Gruvisich said.
