What’s in a name?

Editorial Board

Kudos to the Board of Regents. Their recent approval of the renaming of the P.E. Building to the Barbara E. Forker Building was a welcomed decision. It is about time that Forker is recognized for her many years of service to the university. Forker has dedicated nearly 50 years of her life to Iowa State and is a deserving recipient of this honor.

With all the controversy surrounding the names of buildings on campus, it is nice to see this change enacted without resistance. The dedication of Catt Hall created a stir that has yet to pass. The renaming of the football field to Jack Trice Stadium raised more than a few eyebrows. Finally, the renaming of a building — the Forker building — is met with approval by students and faculty alike.

It is time for the university to reevaluate the image that it wants to project on campus. This is a step in the right direction. The names of buildings are an important part of the history of Iowa State and should be regarded as such.

Do we really want our buildings to bear the names of the people who donated the most money? It would be refreshing for the names to reflect the significance of people or events at Iowa State rather than the importance of the person with the biggest pocketbook.

While monetary donations have provided for numerous important renovations on campus, donations of time, knowledge and dedication have provided a larger service to the university as a whole.

After all, it is the devoted professionals at ISU which students depend on to help shape their experiences at college.

It is wonderful to see that one of these professionals has again been given recognition for her hard work and service.
