ISU’s Lynn pleased with ’97-’98 track recruits

Iowa State men’s track looks set to sport a younger look with the signing of three new recruits — two all state champions and one Junior Olympic Champion.
Dan Reis, Tait Steines and Troy Weiland, all distance runners, have signed national letters of intent to run for the cross-country and track programs at ISU.
Reis, a state champion in the 1600 meters and various cross country events in class 2-A for Turkey Valley-South of Winnesheik, Iowa, was described by Head Coach Steve Lynn as a cross-country runner who also would run as a miler or half-miler.
Steines, the 1-A state cross country champion and 3200-meter runner-up, is supposed to specialize in long distance running.
Also an Iowan, of Calamus-Wheatlund High School, Weiland was the Most Outstanding Athlete at the South Dakota State track meet, held the Junior Olympic champion title for the 800 meters and was a runner-up in the 1500.
He was the state champion in the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter race and is perhaps the most versatile of the three.
“Troy can run anything from the 400 to the two-mile,” Lynn said. Lynn described them as “similar kids.”
“We’re very excited about them. As with any other kids, it remains to be seen what they can do,” Lynn said.
“They’re all good kids with talent, and that fits in with the program.”
The newcomers definitely need a high talent to continue a winning tradition of 20 Top 10 NCAA finishes, 25 Big Eight Championship Teams, 10 Olympians and 41 All-Americans since 1981.
